Ramiro “Sonny” Cavazos, M.D., received his medical doctorate at the University of Texas at Houston Medical School, and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He became interested in the expanding field of bariatric surgery while finishing his general surgery residency at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver under the tutelage of Jeffrey R. Clark, M.D..

Dr. Cavazos went on to receive advanced fellowship training in bariatric surgery under the world-renowned laparoscopic surgeon, Alan Wittgrove, M.D., of San Diego, California – where the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in history, as well as the FDA approval trial for LAP-BAND® Surgery, took place. It was there that Dr. Cavazos realized the distinctness of bariatric surgery from other surgical disciplines, and was moved to dedicate his practice exclusively to this field.

Since then Dr. Cavazos has gained extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery and technical expertise for bariatric procedures, including more than 1,000 weight loss operations performed at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, where he is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Cavazos himself started the Bariatric Surgery program there in 2006, and the Surgical Review Corporation has since hailed it as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®, topping off the list of great reasons to choose Dr. Ramiro Cavazos.
